The story about his death can be started from Ibn Ishaq's Sirat Rasul Allah - page 516 where you can see Zaynab d. al-Harith poisoning Muhammad.
Note that Muslims who live at the time of Muhammad called him as a martyr and not as a person who died from sick. The sickness was due to the effects of this poison he ate at Khaybar Attack in Hijrah 7.
And Muhammad did chewed the MOST POISONED part of the lamb. But he spit it out when he saw one of companion die because of the poison.
This incident is also mentioned in the History of al-Tabari Volume 8 page 124
But when we go to hadith, we can see Muhammad ordering to kill her and the Muslims kill her according to Muhammad's order in a Hasan Sahih Authentic Hadith Sunan Abi Dawud 4512
One year later this incident, he began to feel the pain and illness because the poison gradually damaging his body which slowly increases the pain. History of Tabari - Volume 9 page 108. Then after two years with so much pain he died.
One may ask why it took this much time, when we look closer look at Bishr who swallowed the poison meat actually die after one year only. It is mentioned in Ibn Sa'd Vol 2 page 251-252

Since Muhammad didn't swallow the food, the essence of poison might have entered into his body, and that was the cause of his slow death.
We can then see the pain got severe afterwards. History of Tabari - Volume 9 page 170
Why Muhammad forced every other persn to take the medicine that was given to him for his illness? Is he afraid of his family would poison him or hurt him?
On the very next page of this, Muhammad is claiming that after he recovered from the ill due to the medicine, that Allah will not cause him harm from this illness.
Now when we look in the Quran 69:40-47, we can see that if Muhammad made up something in God's name, God will cut him the aorta. And this is a Meccan ayah.
And we can see that Muhammad himself saying that he fabricated words of Allah while satan cast on his tongue. History of Tabari - Volume 6 : page 111
So after this, you can see Muhammad feel if his aorta been cut off due to the poison he ate from Khaybar Sunan Abi Dawud 4513. This is also mentioned in History of al-Tabari Volume 8 page 124 which is mentioned above.
During Muhammad's death, Aisha told that she never saw any person who suffer more pain than him. Sunan Ibn Majah 1622
Muhammad during the illness, was in such a condition his relatives forced him to have the medicine as mentioned above and was carried by his companions where Muhammad's legs were dragging on the ground. Sahih al-Bukhari 2588
Even his wife has surety that Muhammad is not a Prophet. It is mentioned in History of Tabari - Volume 9 page 136
Also note that even in this situation with extreme pain, his last words was cursing the Jews and Christian. Sahih al-Bukhari 3453, 3454
Even in the death-bed Muhammad is cursing Jews and Christians.
After his death, we can see Muslims are praying over him. Muhammad died on Monday. And was buried on Wednesday. Read it in History of Tabari - Volume 9 page 204
